Art in Action Workshops

Workshops are designed to help docents and teachers by offering further training, organizational skills, and fun art activities. Leadership workshops are designed for School Coordinators. Skills workshops are for docents who want to learn more about using various art media and techniques that are taught in the Art in Action program. Workshops are open to docents and teachers at licensed Art in Action schools. Workshops are held at Art in Action, 3925 Bohannon Drive, Suite 300, Menlo Park, CA 94025 unless otherwise noted.


2011-12 Workshops

School Coordinator Fall Leadership Workshop - September - 2 workshops: 9-11 am and 7-9 pm

At this workshop you will learn about how to coordinate the Art in Action Program at your school. You will learn about new program features and online resources, including how to use current program technology. You will meet fellow Art in Action school coordinators and share ideas and success stories, as well as tips and tricks for inspiring volunteers, setting up art displays, and building the arts community at your school. You will hear about upcoming events and opportunities at Art in Action. Also available at your school site by special arrangement.

Play with Clay - October - 2 workshops: 9-11 am and 7-9 pm

In this hands-on workshop you will learn a variety of clay techniques, including specific skills you will need to teach the clay lessons. Learn more about clay techniques, glazing, firing and clay storage. You will create the clay project you will be teaching and have fun exploring the use of clay to make your own creation.

Register for morning or evening workshop. You must be a docent or teacher from an Art in Action licensed school for this workshop. Also available at your school site by special arrangement.

The Best Art Show - Thursday, March 8, 2012, 7-8:30 pm

This hands-on workshop for school art show curators and docents will help you design and produce an impressive art show for your school or a public venue. You will learn about promoting the show, getting volunteers to help set up the artwork, training student docents, and tips for mounting, labeling, and displaying student artwork. You will get ideas for creative and inexpensive ways to show off various projects and present impressive displays in the classroom, school office, public library displays, or your annual school art show. Museum Visits for Classes and Families - April 5, 2012 11:00 am-12:00 pm

Join Judy Sleeth, Executive Director of Art in Action and experienced museum docent, at the Cantor Arts Center on the beautiful Stanford University campus. Judy will share ideas for making a museum visit exciting for a class or your own children. You will explore the museum, discovering sculptures and paintings that children like, and learn ways to engage students of all ages. You will get tips and suggested activities for animal hunts, posing as portraits, comparing cultures, and recognizing materials.

Taking Children to the Museum - Friday, April 23, 2010, 11:30 am-12:30 pm

Visit the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford and experience new ways of seeing art with Judy Sleeth, Executive Director of Art in Action. Judy is a Cantor docent who knows how to excite young students in a museum. Register here.

School Coordinator Training - Thursday, September 3, 2009, 9-10:30 am and 7-8:30 pm

Meet with other school coordinators to learn how to find and inspire volunteers, manage supplies, and organize the Art in Action Program at your school. See the new Online Lessons and learn how to authorize access for your docents. Register for morning or evening session.

You must be a school coordinator from an Art in Action licensed school for this workshop.

Play with Clay - Thursday, November 5, 2009, 9-11 am and 7-9 pm

Learn how to teach clay lessons, clay techniques, glazing, firing and clay storage. Attendees will create the clay project they will be teaching. Register for morning or evening session.

Creative Collage - Thursday, December 3, 2009, 7-9 pm

Just in time for the holidays, Artist Susie Peyton will lead a workshop on the art of collage. Collage art is perfect for greeting cards, calendars, and other creative gifts. Learn about fun activities for family holiday fun, and make a collage of your own. You will make a four panel accordion book with a collage on each page. Collage materials will be included but feel free to bring items that you might want to incorporate into a collage. The $25 Fee includes materials for the project. Register here.

Pretty Pastels - Thursday, February 4, 2010, 7-9 pm

Deb Cogswell, CSM teacher and artist, will introduce color theory using chalk pastel techniques. You will learn fun new techniques with chalk pastels, and create a masterpiece worthy of framing. You will learn tips for teaching exciting chalk pastel lessons.A $25 fee includes materials for the project. Register here.

The Best Art Show - Thursday, March 4, 2010, 7-8:30 pm

This workshop for school art show curators and docents includes ideas and procedures for mounting, labeling, and displaying student art in the classroom and public venues. You will learn creative and inexpensive ways to show off student artwork and present a beautiful display in the classroom, school office, a public venue, or your annual school art show. FUNdraising Ideas - Thursday, September 17, 2009, 7-8:30pm

Using the NEW Online Lessons - Thursday, October 8, 2009, 7-8:30 pm

Docents and teachers are invited to discover a world of resources and teaching support in the new Online Lessons. Simplify your teaching preparation, and enhance the learning experience.
