Making Your Presentation Successful

Prepare for the discussion.

  • Read the discussion questions and find examples in the masterpiece.
  • Review the lesson concepts and vocabulary.
  • Read the About the Artist page.

Prepare for the project.

  • Prepare materials.
  • Review basic skills and techniques.
  • Try the project with one or two students.
  • Prepare examples for the demonstration that show the project steps.
  • Write basic directions on the board.
  • Describe the unique qualities of the art materials and show students how to care for them.

Create a positive classroom atmosphere.

  • Call students by name. Use name tags or write students’ names on or near their work.
  • Reinforce desirable behavior.
  • Reinforce participation with positive comments.
  • Encourage students to help with setup and cleanup.
  • Have ready sketching or writing activities, art games, or books for early finishers.

Encourage creativity in the project.

  • Offer one-on-one advice and encouragement.
  • Review techniques with small groups while students are working.
  • Show student work during class as examples of different ways to do the project.
  • Encourage students to add details, outlines, shading, and texture to finish the project.
  • Have students assess their own work by standing back and checking balance and emphasis.

Create a setting for the lesson.

  • Wear a costume or hat or bring in an object similar to one in the picture.
  • Bring in other pictures similar to the one in the lesson.
  • Play music while the students work. Let students select music that fits the work of art.
